Final Project & Presentation

Submit assignment.
See assignment rubrics here.

Final projects are open and largely to be self-determined by the student or a group of students based on their interests. These could take the form of a more traditional research paper, a public education project, a political art piece with an accompanying project statement, a #Activism campaign and critical reflection, and more. In supporting students, I will meet at least once with them in the beginning of the semester, and I have created a series of steps to help pace the development of the projects.

Final projects are due Sunday 12/15/19
Presentations will take place on 12/17/19 from 11am – 1pm in our classroom (Kiely 321).

Project Staging Deadlines

STAGE 1: Self-reflection on interests

  • What is your interest in taking this class? What is your interest in urban social movements? Is there a social movement you are particularly interested or invested in? Or are you curious about why and how social movements matter, or why they are often based in urban environments? Reflect on your particular interests. These can be stream of consciousness; we are really just trying to understand why you are here in this class now.
  • We will start this in our first class, but reflections should be submitted using the form linked above on Wednesday 8/28/19.

STAGE 2: Initial 1-1 Project Meeting and Sketch

  • I’ll be meeting with students or student groups to discuss their ideas and assist in scoping their projects.
  • See available dates and times, and sign up in this spreadsheet.
  • You should bring a brief sketch of your project idea; or ideas related to your project.

STAGE 3: Updated Project description and Initial Resource List

  • This submission, due Friday 10/11/19, includes 2 components:
    • PROJECT DESCRIPTION: One paragraph describing the focus of your project, the medium through which you will share your project, and what you hope to learn from this project. You may still be thinking through this and THAT’S OKAY.
    • RESOURCE LIST: Submit a list of 7 resources, includes in-class readings and outside sources that you think will be useful to you in completing your final project. These should be formatted correctly using Chicago-style (see Resources for help with citations). You may not have reviewed most of these yet, and THAT’S OKAY.

Stage 4: Proposal

  • This proposal, due Monday 11/4/19, should be where you have settled with the project, and is the transition between imagining what the project could be, to going forward with one specific version of what the project could be with the goal of completing and turning it in. After this is submitted, the project should not change drastically.
    • PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Similar to stage 3, you will include a description of the project, the medium through which you will share your project, and what you hope to learn from this project. Please use this TEMPLATE to complete this component.
    • ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY: This is an updated resources list that includes the majority of the readings you will use in your project. In addition to a properly formatted citation, you should include a critical summary for each entry. This paragraph-long critical summary will identify what you understand to be useful about the article; the points you find salient.
    • 4-WEEK PROJECT PLAN: Sketch out a 4-week project plan that identifies that tasks you will accomplish each week to move your project to completion and ensure success.
