Self-Reflection on interests

August 28, 2019

  • What is your interest in taking this class? What is your interest in urban social movements? Is there a social movement you are particularly interested or invested in? Or are you curious about why and how social movements matter, or why they are often based in urban environments? Reflect on your particular interests. These can be stream of consciousness; we are really just trying to understand why you are here in this class now.
  • We will start this in our first class, but reflections should be submitted using the form linked above on Wednesday 8/28/19.

Submit your assignment.

  1. For a while now I have been much interested in taking and learning about Urban Studies. Being that my family comes from the middle east and I am a first generation child from a family of immigrants, I find it much important to learn about urban cities, their habits, and mostly about the people living in those cities. Especially having one of the most spectacular and commercial cities in the world at my fingertips, learning about these Urban cities has always interested me. I am completely fascinated with the habits and interest of city dwellers, and how they react. Many movements like the #metoo movement as well as #blacklivesmatter movements are all centerpieces of urban movements that have occurred in the last 5 years. The fact that people in the 21st century especially are so enabled and prompted by society to push for what they believe in is what will make urban studies so interesting.

  2. My interest in taking this class started two semesters ago. I found myself skeptical about the roots of social movements. I am interested in learning about feminist movements. I am also the kind of person that don’t really know much about social movements and how important they are to our society. So I am curious to learn a bit of everything.
